‘AIfA’ in Bonn. This group is funded by the German Science Foundation
(DFG) in the Emmy Noether programme and will work one several aspects of
utilising the new generation of radio telescopes for gravitational lens
research. This includes preparations for using LOFAR surveys for lens
searches, detailed observations of known lenses with the (E)VLA and
(e-)MERLIN, and the development and improvement of deconvolution and lens
modelling methods. Main goal of the project is to use lenses (especially
with extended sources) to obtain information about the mass structure and
evolution of galaxies at medium and high redshifts.

The PhD project will consist of carrying out and reducing own observations
as well as analysing archived interferometric radio data for lens
modelling purposes. Participation in other parts of the ‘Radio lenses’
project is also expected and will be arranged according to the interests
of the candidate.

The ideal applicant will have a good background in astrophysics and a
special interest in the fields of gravitational lensing and/or radio
interferometry. Experience in at least one of these fields and good
computing skills are a prerequisite for a successful application. The
degree of a Diplom, MSc or equivalent in physics or astronomy is required
for this position.

The AIfA (http://www.astro.uni-bonn.de/) hosts strong groups working on
cosmology, extragalactic astronomy and gravitational lenses, galaxy
clusters, radio astronomy, and other fields. A close cooperation will also
be established with the neighbouring ‘Max-Planck-Institut fuer
Radioastronomie’ (http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/). The ‘International Max
Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Radio and Infrared Astronomy at the
Universities of Bonn and Cologne’ (http://www.mpifr.de/IMPRS/) offers
additional opportunities.

Applications sent before the deadline 1 June 2007 will receive full
consideration. Later applications may be accepted until the position is
filled. Payment is according to the standard German civil service rate
TVOED 13/2, equivalent to BAT IIa/2. Earliest starting date is 1 August
2007, the appointment is limited to three years. Applications including
curriculum vitae, copies of relevant university degrees, preferred
starting date, and a description of experience and research interests
should be sent to the address below. Submission by email is welcome.

2 post-doctoral positions available: Translation of French Cued Speech.

Global framework
This work is a part of a French project which goal is the development of a phone terminal for hard of hearing people communicating with the specific Cued Speech language.

Cued Speech was developed by Dr. Cornett in 1967. Its purpose is to bring the natural oral language accessible to hearing impaired, by the intensive use of lip-reading. But lip-reading is ambiguous: for example, /p/ and /b/ are different phonemes with identical lip shape. Cornett proposed (1) to replace invisible articulators (such as vocal cords) that participate to the production of the sound by hand gestures, and (2) to keep the visible articulators (such as lips). Basically, it means complementing the lip-reading by various manual gestures, so that phonemes which have similar lip shapes can be differentiated.

Thanks to the combination of both lip-shapes and manual gestures, each phoneme has a specific visual aspect. Such a “hand & lip-reading” becomes as meaningful as the oral message. The interest of CS is to use a code which is similar to oral language. As a consequence, it prevents hearing impaired people to have an under-specified representation of oral language and help them to learn to verbalize properly.

The CSs message is formatted into a list of consonant-vowel syllables (CV syllables). Each CV syllable is coded with a specific manual gesture and combined to the corresponding lip shape, so that the whole looks unique.

Post-doc proposals
Around the TELMA’s project, the Gispa-lab offers two post-doc prositions in order to work on :

* Image processing and data fusion: the candidate will have to test some of the algorithms that have been developed at the lab for lip contours extraction and for speech parameters estimation. A study about the estimated parameters for the purpose of speech data fusion models will have to be improved or redefined.
* Speech data fusion: the aim is to develop models for the fusion of the hand information and the lip information in order to translate sentences. This work could be based on the models already developped for syllbles and words recognition. The proposed model will have to take into account the non synchronization betwee the hand and the lip flows. Speech models coming from the automatic speech recgnition domain could be considered in order to improve the translation rate. A strong coordination and collaboration between both post-doctoral works will be necessary.

To apply , please send a resume by e-mail to: Alice Caplier caplier@enserg.fr (www.lis.inpg.fr) and/or Denis Beautemps Denis.Beautemps@gipsa-lab.inpg.fr

Postdoctoral position at Rockefeller University’s Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is available for an outstanding candidate with expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry and mammalian cell culture. The focus of our research is to dissect interactions between transcription factors (especially RNA polymerase II-associated coactivators and nuclear receptors) that control tissue-specific expression of genes involved in metabolism. In addition to using standard biochemical and cellular methods, we also have established novel approaches all of which allow us to reconstruct the various steps of the transcription process in great detail. The Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) is pleased to announce the sixth round of the research fellowship program, Islam in Southeast Asia: View from within.

Themes

Popular Islam

"Popular Islam" focuses on encouraging researchers to examine ways in which Islamic beliefs and practices reach all believers and are reflected through various means of religious. communication such as studying Khutbah in local mosques, reading Islamic booklets, and/ or listening to Muslim radio programs. The question of how Islam can shape and influence, while at the same time is being shaped by, the lives of ordinary Southeast Asian Muslims in various local contexts is just one aspect of this topic that could be analyzed.

Globalization and Identity Politics

Muslim communities in Southeast Asia are not immune from globalization processes. New forms of economic and political integration on a world scale and the accelerated flows of goods, people and information across the globe all create new opportunities and challenges for Muslims in the region. The interaction of global and regional forces with local processes has been perceived both as a threat to Muslim identities and as beneficial to the development of a new transnational Islam. This research theme seeks to explore how Muslim identities in Southeast Asia are formed and shaped by regional and globalizing forces.

Islam and Changing Gender Realities

Rapidly evolving social, cultural and economic processes are leading to unprecedented changes in the societal roles of men and women. Muslim communities in Southeast Asia are being confronted with a diversity of values and lifestyles expressing multiple definitions of gender roles and relationships not always in line with dominant values. This research area encourages researchers to examine how gender roles in both the public and private sphere are changing for Muslims in Southeast Asia and relate those changes to current theological and political debates.

Islam Values, Economic Activities and Social Responsibilities

Studies in this area should examine how Islamic values and institutions can provide alternative economic options to those perceived as condradictory to Qur`anic principles such as riba. Area of focus could include identifying how Islamic economic values work in a modern business environment, analysis of indigenous entrepreneurial models that have been or can be utilized for local level empowerment and/ or studies of the lives of entrepreneurs and the ways Islamic values shape and are re-shaped by their economic activities and social responsibilities.

Eligibility

Candidates must be nationals of Southeast Asian countries, hold at least a Bachelor degree and should not be over 40 years of age.
Candidates may work in different sectors including academia, media, and non-governmental organizations. Candidate must be highly motivated to deepen their understanding of Islam in the region.
Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Value

The fellowship consists of an average research grant of $5,000 to cover all research costs for a maximum period of six months in the original country of resercher, and funded participation in mentoring workshops.
The Secretariat will arrange for editing, publication and distribution of the report in a "work in progress" series.

Application Procedure

To apply for this fellowship program, candidates need to submit a complete research proposal. Proposed research projects should include sufficient details so that it can be judged for its merit and feasibility.
The candidates can download the application form from our website as a MS Word document. Applications by e-mail are also accepted.

The closing date for application submission is 30 November 2007.
