Detail Beasiswa : PhD Students / Postdoc Positions in Ubiquitin Signaling, DNA-dependent Processes and Cancer
We’re looking for highly motivated students and postdocs to work in the field of Ubiquitin signaling, DNA-dependent processes and cancer.
Our interest: Ubiquitination of proteins is a post-translational modification required for a wide spectrum of biological functions, and defects in several processes involving ubiquitination underlie human diseases. The best characterized ubiquitination reaction involves the formation of polyubiquitin chains, leading to the degradation of target proteins by the proteasome. However, ubiquitination is a complex modification that also mediates cellular functions other than protein degradation. Protein modification by ubiquitin is a reversible reaction and specific proteases can remove the ubiquitin moiety.A vast repertoire of deubiquitinases (DUBs), including approximately 80 genes, are encoded by the human genome, and are emerging as important regulators of the ubiquitination-mediated processes.
As the DUBs are largely unknown, establishing the biological functions and the molecular mechanisms of these proteases is not only a crucial step toward understanding ubiquitin-mediated signaling, but is also a fundamental aspect of cancer biology. We use functional genomics and proteomics approaches to determine the functions and mechanisms of action of DUB enzymes. Our investigations are primarily on DUB genes that are important for the expression and stability of the genome. We are focusing currently on the characterization of BAP1 (BRCA1 Associated Protein 1) deubiquitinase. BAP1 interacts with the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 and the transcription factor YY1 (Yin Yang 1), two proteins involved in transcription, DNA damage/repair and cell cycle checkpoints.

Structure and physicochemical properties of water, for example their dipole moment, results in formation of cluster of water molecules bound together by hydrogen bounding. Formation of water clusters has been investigated in vitro and there are some indications that formation of water clusters can influence aqueous solubility of drugs, especially lipophilic drugs that have only limited solubility in water. Also, there are some indications that water clusters can increase physical stability of molecular aggregates and that formation of such aggregates interferes with high throughput screening for new chemical entities. Furthermore, in vitro studies have indicated that layers of stagnant water molecules could be water clusters. Carbohydrates and glycoproteins at membrane surfaces can perhaps enhance formation of such clusters. Little or no information is available on formation of water clusters in vivo.
The purpose of this project is to investigate the influence of cluster formation on the aqueous solubility of drugs and their ability to permeate biological membranes.
Applicants must have finished MS degree(or equivalent) in pharmacy, chemistry, biochemistry, physicalchemistry or in related subjects. This is a three year fellowship, about 35,000- EUR per year. Detail Beasiswa : Research Assistant/PhD Studentship for Applied Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science
The research group Plant Systems Modeling of the Department Plant Systems Biology at the VIB in Ghent, Belgium, has an opening for a Research Assistant / Ph. D student (f/m)
Computational modeling of auxin dynamics during lateral root initiation
The department plant systems biology of the VIB has an opening for an ambitious and energetic research assistant in the new research group Plant Systems Modeling, that focuses on computational modeling of plant developmental biology. Systems biology is a relatively new approach in biology, that shifts focus from individual molecules, genes and cells to their dynamic interplay: how do molecules, genes and cells form a working mechanism, behaving in a predictable way? A crucial pilar in this approach at the interface of biology, physics and computer science, is computational modeling. Modeling the biological system in a computer simulation gives us insights into developmental mechanisms, and helps us identify the gaps in our understanding of the biological system. These insights suggest new experiments, which our experimental collaborators test in the wet-lab.
What will be your task?
You will be building and analyzing dynamical models of lateral root initiation, in close collaboration with molecular biologists in the research group Root Development headed by Dr. Tom Beeckman. Lateral roots originate from cells in the root basal meristem, a proliferating tissue region just above the root tip, forming a regular branching pattern with evenly spaced lateral roots. The crucial signal for initiating the lateral root is most likely the phytohormone auxin.
Auxin levels oscillate at a period of around 15 hours, precisely coinciding with the rhythm by which new lateral roots appear. Our modeling project aims at unraveling the mechanisms behind these oscillating auxin flows, which may be driven by a dynamics interaction between auxin and the production and cellular localization of its transporter proteins, including PIN, AUX and LAX. In the second part of your project you will also include root growth and the tightly orchestrated cell divisions following lateral root initiation.
Your background
For this challenging project that should lead to a Ph.D dissertation we are looking for a motivated MSc in applied mathematics, physics or computer science with interest and affinity for biology, or an MSc in Biology or Biotechnology with interest and affinity for numeric mathematics and computer science. Programming experience (C++ or similar) and experience in biological modeling (differential equations / cell-based modeling) are a big plus.
What do we offer you?
This project gives the opportunity to get a Ph.D in systems biology, in an energetic, international, multi-disciplinary environment. We have funding for four years, but we encourage you to apply for external funds.
Interested?

Candidates will be considered and shortlisted for interviews through their application for admission to NUS. No separate scholarship application is required.
*ASEAN nations: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Terms and conditions
1. The scholarship covers tuition fees and provides an annual living allowance of S$4,300. The scholarship is tenable for the minimum period of candidature for the respective undergraduate courses at NUS.
2. The scholarship does not carry a bond. However, tuition fees at NUS have been subsidised by the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) through the MOE Tution Grant Subsidy. The MOE Tuition Grant Subsidy is not covered under the scholarship scheme. The MOE Tuition Grant Subsidy carries a bond for students who are not Singapore citizens. All Singapore permanent residents and international students taking up the MOE Tuition Grant Subsidy are required to work with a Singapore-registered company of their choice for three years upon graduation. Due to the higher fees and subsidies for the Dental and Medical courses, students in these courses are obliged to work for a longer bond period of five and six years respectively.
3. The scholarship is open to students from all faculties. However, candidates should note that due to the highly competitive nature of courses like Medicine, Dentistry and Law, there are limited scholarships for students who wish to pursue these courses.
4. Recipients of the scholarship may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, grant or award without prior approval from the University.
5. The University does not provide any assistance towards travel or other costs nor does it guarantee employment for the scholar upon graduation.
6. The scholarship covers the entire duration of undergraduate studies on condition that scholars maintain a minimum CAP (Cumulative Average Point) of 3.5. The academic performance is monitored on a semester basis.
7. If the scholar decides to terminate the scholarship prematurely, the university reserves the right to impose a repayment on a case-by-case basis.
Back
Application and shortlisting Procedure
1. All applicants for admission to NUS will be shortlisted automatically through their application for admission.
2. Shortlisted candidates will be informed by 30 June of the year of admission.
3. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of competition among eligible candidates. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by email for a scholarship interview. Leadership, co-curricular records and other capabilities will be assessed during the interview. Please note that the University shortlists candidates strictly based on academic merit. Not all applicants for the scholarship will be called for an interview.
4. NUS reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.

Introduction
The Department of Physiological Sciences, University of Advanced Studies (Sokendai) is operated by the National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS) at Okazaki (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/). NIPS consists of 19 divisions dedicated to the study of the physiological functions of living organisms including humans. Research areas cover various physiological sciences including morphology, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular and cellular biology, and information science. Research activities are extensive and comprehensive. Some of our current research involves the molecular structure of ion channels, intracellular dynamics of ions, mechanisms of secretion and cell volume regulation, development and differentiation of neuronal cells, mechanisms of synaptic transmission and neural network formation, and higher brain functions such as processing of sensory information, motor control, learning, and cognition.
To carry out the mission of the institute as a cooperative center for universities and research institutes within and outside Japan, we accept many visiting scientists from all around the world for collaborative projects.
Four types of scholarships are possible at NIPS.
The first type of scholarship is the “University Recommendation” MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.
Each year, at least one “University Recommendation” candidate is selected for the 5-year combined Master’s/Ph.D. program, which starts in October. Please note that this scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with other awards or scholarships. Students wishing to apply for this scholarship should make sure that they discuss their application with their prospective supervisor at NIPS. More information regarding the details of the scholarship is given at the Study in Japan website(http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0302e.html) and at the JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization http://www.jasso.go.jp/study_j/scholarships_e.html) website.
The MEXT scholarship covers the following:
* Application fee (30,000 yen)
* Admission fee (282,000 yen, payable only the first year of study)
* Annual tuition fee (535,800 yen per year)
* Return economy-class airfare between Okazaki and the student’s home country
* Monthly stipend (172,000 yen)
The second type of scholarship is a Seiriken Scholarship.
Exceptional students wishing to enter 5-year and 3-year Ph.D. programs at NIPS are eligible to apply for this type of scholarship. It covers the admission fee and the annual tuition fees for successful applicants. Further information can be obtained from scholar@nips.ac.jp
The third type of scholarship is an “Embassy Recommendation” MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.
Through this system, a certain number of 5-year combined Master’s/Ph.D. scholarships are awarded annually. Applications should be made through Japanese embassies/consulates in the applicant’s home country. (Please note that this application procedure is different from the “University Recommendation” MEXT Scholarships noted above.) Applications are open to candidates of any nationality except Japan, and the scholarship details are the same as those noted above. Please see the Study in Japan website (http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0302e.html) for more information as well as the list of Japan’s Embassies and Consulates (Ministry of Foreign Affairs website http://www.mofa.go.jp/about/emb_cons/over/index.html).
Finally, a certain number of scholarships are provided by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization), as well as private foundations.
For more information on these scholarships, please see the JASSO website at http://www.jasso.go.jp/study_j/scholarships_sfisij_e.html
Eligibility
In general, candidates must have completed (or be expected to obtain before starting study in NIPS) a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university for acceptance into the 5-year combined master’s/Ph.D. Candidates wishing to enter the 3-year program must have completed a master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university. People who currently hold Ph.D. degrees are not eligible for any of the above scholarships.
Candidates must be well prepared for the course for which they are applying within the Department of Physiological Sciences. Those candidates who are not native speakers of English are required by the Board of Graduate Studies to provide the results of an English language test and are expected to meet the following standards of proficiency:
* TOEFL (paper-based test):
Minimum overall score of 600, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE).
* TOEFL (computer-based test):
Minimum overall score of 250, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the essay writing section of the text.
* TOEFL (Internet-based test):
Minimum overall score of 100, with a minimum score of 24 in the writing section of the test.
How to Apply
It is essential to secure appropriate supervision before applying for the above scholarships. Therefore, your first step in applying for a scholarship should be to get in contact with at least one of the professors in NIPS (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/outline/pub/staff.html) to find out about any technical requirements as well as the range and depth of background knowledge that is needed by successful candidates for admission.
After you have made contact with an appropriate supervisor, please ask him/her to send an application form for the “University Recommendation” scholarship to you. Your application form must be completed and returned to the Board by 6 February 2008.
The Board of Graduate Studies at NIPS consults with the professors responsible for determining admission to the University about the respective merits of each applicant. On the basis of that consultation, applicants who are on the shortlist for the “University Recommendation” MEXT Ph.D. Scholarship will be invited to an interview at NIPS in February every year for the Ph.D. Program starting in October of the same year.

Applications should be received before 25th July 2007.
The LATTS (Laboratoire Techniques, Territoires et Sociétés) research centre of the Paris-based Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées offers a 3-year PhD Grant as detailed below.
Ph. D. Grant: LATTS, Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (Paris) (starting October 2007)
The Capital City: Financialisation, real estate and city-regions development: an international comparison
Ph. D. supervisor: Dr. Ludovic Halbert, CNRS researcher at LATTS
Context:
Over the last ten to fifteen years, large firms have outsourced the management of their office park encouraging the development of a real estate sector that is becoming more international, more professional and more financialised. This participates in a concentration of an increasing amount of capital in large metropolises where commercial real estate is fast-growing and fast-changing. Global city-regions are thus becoming the support of a financial geography of which relatively little is still known today.
Consequently, investments in commercial real estate (offices, warehouses, etc.) tend to shape the forms and the modalities of the production of metropolitan spaces. According to market rules; or in the framework of public-private partnerships, the geography of international real estate investments needs to be addressed, especially in the light of the two contemporary debates on i) Sustainable Urban Development and ii) the Societal Responsibility of Firms (i.e. investment funds).
The project:
The research will analyse the transformation of metropolitan spaces and the modalities of their production in the light of the changes happening in the commercial real estate sector, with a particular interest in on-going financialisation processes. Strategies and representations of the main actors of the real estate industry will be observed (promoters, commercial agents, asset managers). The research will be multi-scalar (inter and intra-city-regions), comparative (between several metropolises, including the Paris Ile-de-France region) and inter-disciplinary (finance, geography, planning, economy and sociology), according to the specificities of the LATTS centre.
Profile:
Applicants will have achieved (or be about to achieve) a social sciences Master`s degree in an area such as planning, geography, economics/finance or sociology. They should be familiar with qualitative research methodologies (documentary research, interviews), although a grasp of basic statistics and cartographic tools would also be positive. There are no restrictions on
nationality. The working language will be English, but knowledge of (or a willingness to learn) basic French will be beneficial. A solid sense of rigour and a hard-working capacity will help the applicant to successfully develop an innovative and intellectually demanding research project. Prior research experience concerning real estate, financialisation, location strategies of firms, etc. will be looked upon favourably. Applicants should be willing to work in several city-regions in Europe and perhaps in Asia.
Practical information:
The successful applicant will receive a fully equipped office within LATTS and full access to library facilities. The Ph. D. grant amounts to 1 400 euros net per month for a period of 3 years starting in October 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
For further information and details of how to apply, please contact Ludovic Halbert (ludovic.halbert@enpc.fr).

Research Assistant/PhD Studentship for Applied Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science, Ghent University [Belgium]
Interested?

[Ireland] PhD Studentship in Trinity College Dublin on Groundwater Denitrification Potential in Irish Aquifers
Research studentship tenable at Trinity College Dublin in association with Teagasc Johnstown Castle (Wexford)
Applications are invited for a research studentship on the above topic.
Project objectives:
The leaching of nitrates in soils, combined with agricultural practice, is a potential threat to groundwater quality. This project proposes to quantify the movement and transformations of nitrate (NO3) from below the rooting zone to groundwater within agricultural systems. Denitrification is one of the main mechanisms for the reduction of NO3 movement through subsoils and groundwater, however this process may also lead to emissions of the greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O), rather than the environmentally benign di-nitrogen (N2). Internationally, subsurface denitrification has received only limited attention, due to methodological limitations that have more recently been overcome. Denitrification may prove to be the key process in determining NO3 occurrence in receiving waters. Understanding the microbial denitrification process within subsoil/groundwater will lead to a better understanding of the fate of NO3 delivery to groundwater and may also lead to management procedures for reducing both N2O emissions and NO3 leaching. The project will, for the first time in Ireland, quantify subsoil/groundwater denitrification rates and investigate the ratio of N2 and N2O, the end products of denitrification. The data generated will assist in the prediction of NO3 occurrence in receiving waters, environmental risk assessment and the achievement of Water Framework Directive objectives. Finally the N2/N2O emissions quantified can be used to refine Irish greenhouse gas emission inventories under the Kyoto Protocol.
Requirements:
Applicants should have a good primary degree (II1 or I) or an M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Environmental hydrogeology/Hydrology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Agricultural Science, etc.). Knowledge and experience of hydrology, soil physics and solute transport would be an advantage. A full driving license is required.
Funding:
The position is funded by the Department of Agricultures Stimulus Fund. The successful student will receive funding of €21,000 covering postgraduate stipend and tuition fees (Note: tuition fees for EU residents are currently c. €4,500 per annum).
Location and supervision:
The project student will be primarily based at the Teagasc Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Co. Wexford. It is possible that the student may spend periods of time in other research institutes. The student will be registered as a full time research student in the Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, working under the supervision of Mr. Paul Johnston in association with Teagasc supervisors (Dr. Karl Richards and Dr M. Ibrahim Khalil).
Starting date:
The project will start as soon as a suitable candidate is recruited. The funding is for a three year Ph.D. project.
