AU Admission Instructions for Semiconductor Engineering Industry R&D Master Degree Program for International Students
I. Authority
1. This procedure is set in accordance with “Asia University Regulations for Admission of
International Students”.
2. Based upon “the Project of Increasing Master-level Industrial R&D Manpower” by the Executive Yuan, and “the Key Points of Action Implementing for Universities to Set up Industrial R&D Master Degree Programs” by the Ministry of Education, this program must be approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education co-hosted by Asia University and the Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, affiliated with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacture Corporation.

III. Application Qualifications
1. Nationality
International students are defined as those who are neither overseas Chinese, nor citizens of the Republic of China. Those who have had their R.O.C. nationality annulled for 8 years or more are eligible to apply. This regulation does not apply to students holding Hong Kong or Macao citizenship.
2. Educational Background
Applicants who have graduated from college or university recognized by the Ministry of Education- Taiwan can apply for admissions (Please refer to the website http://www.edu.tw/EDU_WEB/Web/BICER/index.php) International students with bachelor’s degree are eligible for Master’s programs.
3. Requirements: Applicants must be college graduates, majoring in physics, chemistry, material science, engineering and electric engineering and mechanical engineering.

IV. Required Documents
1. Two application forms for admission with a 2-inch photo taken in the last 3 months must be
attached to each of the forms.
2. One copy of the highest-level diploma (Enclosed with either a Chinese or an English
translation of the diploma).
※Applicants who have received admission should submit one copy of their diploma and transcript verified (with official stamp/seal) by the Taiwan Overseas Missions in the country of their original school when they return their acceptance letter. After this, an applicant is ready for enrollment.
3. One official transcript of the academic records in English or Chinese certified by the school
graduated from.
4. A Chinese or English version of autobiography
5. One study plan in Chinese or English
6. Two letters of recommendation
7. One health certificate issued within the last six months (Attached with HIV certification)

8. English proficiency certificate (Computer-based TOEFL: 150 or above, Paper-based TOEFL:
470 or above, Internet-based TOEFL:52 or above, or diploma obtained in an English
speaking country required for applicants of the Master program from non-English speaking
countries. Those with TOEFL scores more than 500 will be preferable.

9. One copy of passport

V. Incomplete application documents or procedures
Those who were overdued, unqualified (do not meet the general qualifications) or do not have a complete documentation in their application will be rejected in their application. Application documents will not be returned. Applicants with incomplete application documents or who have not followed the procedures will be informed through e-mail.


VI. Application Period
March 1, 2008~May 31, 2008. Applications received after the deadline will not be
processed. If the application is sent by mail, the date of application is determined by the
postmark.
VII. How to apply
1. Applying in person
You may file your application in person, or through your representative by submitting all the requirements to the Center for International Academic Exchange (CIAE), AU.

VIII. Tuition and Fees(NT$)
1. Tuition and Fees
The following tuition rates apply only to the first semester of the 2007 academic year;Tuition is subject to change annually.
※Graduate programs:
Tuition and fees(per semester)
Computer Science and Information Engineering Department : NT $54,870

2. Health Exam for New Students : NT$1000
3. Insurance Fee
Once international students are admitted, they must apply for the “Alien Residence Certificate(ARC).” According to the National Health Insurance regulations, it is mandatory for foreign students with such certificates to join the National Health Program after living in Taiwan for 4 months, and pay Health Insurance fees accordingly. Therefore, after the first semester enrollment, the students need to provide a proof of 4 months long from any agencies or they may choose to join the Foreign Student Insurance in Asia University(NT$2000 for 4 months)and purchase Health Insurance of 2 months long from the National Health Program. After that, students have to purchase Health Insurance of 6 months long from the National Health Program every semester.

4. Campus Housing International students are guaranteed a slot in the campus dormitories. Dormitory fee is approximately NT$25,000(Occupancy for 4)per academic year (not including summer and winter breaks).


IX. Regulations of Funds and Tuition :
The primary purpose to set up Industrial R&D Master Degree Programs is to fill the gap of master degree industrial R&D manpower. The quota of the students to be admitted is granted in addition to quota approved by the Ministry of Education. Therefore, the training funds of the program are supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation during 2-year study period. The tuitions and living expenses will be sponsored by Asia University and the collaborating company during this period. However, once the admission is approved, the students have to sign up a contract with the collaborating company. The tuition and fees, and the living expenses will be paid by the scholarship jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Education, the Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation and Asia University( Approximately NT$640,000 per student for 2 years.)

X. Regulations of Withdrawal and Voluntary Expulsion:
(1)Admitted students are not allowed to apply for reservation of student accreditation. During the study period, students applying for temporary withdrawal for involuntary reasons should ask for permissions from the university and the collaborated company.

(2)If the student’s withdrawal has been approved and the program is terminated after the student’s resumption, the unfinished curriculum could be substituted by normal graduate institute curriculum. The subsequent subsidy from the collaborated company, the adjustments of the related rights and obligations should be executed according to the contract between the students and the collaborated company.
(3)The expulsive student should be responsible for compensation to pay for the loss of the collaborated company. The principle of compensation refers to “The Statement of Default Penalty”

XI. Study Period and the Regulation of Extended Study Period
(1)According to the University Law, the study period of a master’s degree program is 1-4 years. But in this program, the study period is no longer than 2 years.
(2)If the students take the courses over 2 years (i.e. 4 semesters), Taiwan Government and the collaborating company will no longer sponsor for students. Tuitions and fees during the extended study period should be paid by students themselves.

XII. Service Period After Graduation
Graduates of the project should work for the collaborated company for at least 2 years. Extended service period depends on extra scholarships or research subsidies.

XIII. Statement of unemployment
The collaborated company only guarantees to hire 70% (including 70%) graduates, not 100% graduates. Being employed or not will be depended on the research results, the major specialization level, the performance of professional practice and the oral test for employment qualifications. Graduates should not have any objection to it. If not recruited by the collaborated company, the unemployed graduates have no obligations of working for the collaborated company.


XIV. The Statement of Default Penalty
(1)The students who drop out from school or default performance should be responsible for complete compensation cost. The calculation of the interest will be included in the total amount of cost provided in the contract. If there is punitive compensation, the total amount of cost (including the interest) will not exceed 150% of the compensation cost.

XV. Other Points of Attention 1. International students who have been expelled from any university in Taiwan are not eligible to apply for admission. Non-compliance would result in immediate revocation of the applicant’s status as a registered Asia University student.

2. Each academic year begins on August 1 and ends on July 31 in the following year. Fall semester classes usually begin in mid-September, and spring semester classes begin in mid-February of the following year.
3. Any application matters not stipulated here will be at the Admission Committee’s discretion.
