Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their course for
its entire length (3 years – 180 credits). Students who have already

Scholarships

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career
and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per
year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is
dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which
can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the
student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission,
within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the
original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation
attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section
below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment
is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation
(residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name
of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy;
for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of
arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the
following month.
Requirements to maintain the scholarship
Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from
more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study
grant while receiving the Verrès Campus scholarship must promptly
notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic
performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

document and fill in the fields relating to the national state-level
university admission exam up until July 4th.

We emphasise that the data shown in the documents must coincide with
those inserted in the online application form. Moreover, failure to
attach even one of the above documents will result in exclusion from
the selection process.

Selection outcomes
Following the closure of the online application form, a special
commission will meet to assess the applications.

At the end of the selection process, a provisional list of standings
will be composed with the names of the students who have been awarded

awarded a scholarship in the event of one or more renunciations.

The list of standings will be affixed to the Official Register of the
Politecnico di Torino. Beginning from February 29th, 2008 (1st
application period) or May 23rd, 2008 (2nd application period),
information about where and how to access the selection outcomes will
be published on this project website and on the Apply@Polito section
of the Politecnico website.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AFFIXING OF THE LIST OF STANDINGS TO THE OFFICIAL
REGISTER OF THE POLITECNICO DI TORINO WILL BE, FOR ALL INTENTS AND
PURPOSES, THE ONLY OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION OF INCLUSION IN THE LIST OF
SELECTIONS AND, FOR STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE QUALIFICATIONS, THE
ONLY OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP.

An e-mail message will be sent to all scholarship recipients and
eligible applicants summarising the terms for the disbursement of the
scholarship. This message will be sent to the address(es) specified by
the students themselves on the online application form. NEVERTHELESS,
THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION OF THE
OUTCOME OF THE SELECTION.

The scholarship awardees and eligible applicants who wish to confirm
their position must take the following steps:

download the scholarship acceptance form which will be published
together with the list of selection outcomes, fill it in and fax it to
the number +39 011 090 6329. Failure to send in the acceptance fax
within the given period will constitute a definitive renunciation and
the scholarship will be reassigned accordingly.
upon arrival in Italy scholarship recipients must hand in the original
documentation, which was previously attached to the online application
form (see the above list), to the Politecnico di Torino. Before
handing in the aforementioned documentation, we recommend that you
make photocopies for yourself. We ask that you not hand in any other
documentation other than that which has been required, and put all the
documentation in a single folder bearing your name, surname and
“Verrès Campus project”. We reemphasize that the information given in
the documents must correspond to that attached to the online
application form. Failure to hand in the original documentation within
10 days from the student’s arrival according to the above conditions
will result in the non-allocation of the scholarship.
Publication of the final list of standings is foreseen for March 2008
(1st application period) or June 2008 (2nd application period).

We emphasize that the Politecnico di Torino assumes no responsibility
for the applicant’s failure to view the list of standings and/or the
terms for the acceptance of the scholarships as published online and
on the Official Register of the Politecnico.

In all the e-mail messages and the correspondence sent to the
Politecnico following the awarding of the scholarship, the recipient
must clearly specify “Verrès Campus project”.

totally at the expense of the student.
The Politecnico di Torino does not guarantee any type of accommodation
for Verrès Campus scholarship recipients. For students turning to the
private market to rent an apartment, the initial amount requested for
the cautionary deposit is equal to about three months rent, plus any
fees charged by the real estate agency, if applicable. The approximate
amount of the rent for an apartment shared with other students comes
to about 250 EURO/month per person, and the rent for a small/medium
sized apartment is about 500 EURO/month.
Enrolment at the Politecnico includes insurance coverage for accidents
occurring on the university premises.

Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law
for non-EU citizens, is 98 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy,
students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for
the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. For further
information on these matters, see the Health insurance section.

The Technical University of Dresden (TUD) is one of the top 10 universities in Germany and is justifiably proud of its fine tradition in education and the state of the art facilities that resulted from the modernization after the German reunification in 1990. New faculties have been added to the traditional faculties of sciences and engineering including economics, humanities, social sciences and medicine. As a result the range of research possibilities and courses now offered by the TUD is broad and perfectly suited for interdisciplinary graduate studies like the Masters course in Molecular Bioengineering.

Over 9,000 members of staff, including 800 professors and senior lecturers ensure the high standards of teaching and research that have established the TUD´s reputation and attracted 30,000 students. 3,000 of them are international students from about 100 different countries. The ratio between staff and students is very competitive and this makes for a more personal atmosphere and excellent studying conditions.

Studying in Dresden

Although Dresden was largely destroyed during the second world war, it is still nicknamed "Florence on the Elbe": The sumptuous art collections and impressive monumental buildings have given the city world-wide fame. Dresden is also a research and science city, as well as an important industrial stronghold. Yet first and foremost, it is a first-rate city of culture, with world-famous ensembles such as the Saxon State Opera, the State Chapel and the Kreuzchor singers.

The river Elbe divides Dresden into the old city and the new city. In the old city on the left banks of the Elbe, famous buildings and interesting sights are lined up: the Zwinger, the Green Vault, the Painting Gallery, the castle, the Semper Opera, the Court Chapel, Taschenberg Palace, the Dresden Church of our Lady (Frauenkirche), which is still undergoing restoration, the Brühlsche Terrasse. All of these can are easy to reach on foot. The new city, on the other hand, exudes an aura of middle-class baroque and shows what Dresden was like during the industrial revolution. The large district, dating back to the industrial revolution, between Bautznerstrasse and Priessnitzstrasse, Bischofsweg and Königsbrücker Strasse features many lovingly restored buildings that contrast with the old, dilapidated houses. Äusseren Neustadt, Dresden's 'in' district, has particularly appealing contrasts: colourful and exclusive shops, fine and simple restaurants, narrow streets with pubs, restaurants, bars and clubs.

There are three remarkable castles on the Elb slope between Albert Bridge and Blauem Wunder: Albrechtsberg Castle, Lingner Castle and Eckberg Castle. Pillnitz Castle and Moritzburg Castle in the surrounding region, are also well worth a visit. The Elb Valley extends around Saxony's capital city and is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe.

PhD Position in Underwater Acoustic Communication

A PhD research fellowship is offered in the field of underwater acoustic communication and underwater sensor network at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications
(http://www.iet.ntnu.no), Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical
Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Recent developments in information and communication technology have opened new
possibilities for observation and monitoring of the marine environment. New concepts, based on autonomous sensors working together in wireless communication networks are becoming feasible for monitoring of oceanographic and environmental parameters and for estimation of fish and plankton abundance.

The goal of this PhD project is to participate in the development of new marine observation methodology based on autonomous sensors and underwater communication networks. The fields of underwater acoustics, signal processing and electronics are particular relevant fields in this context. We seek highly motivated individuals holding a master’s degree in physics, telecommunications or other relevant disciplines. A previous experience in underwater acoustic communication system and/or instrumentation is preferred.
A PhD fellowship at NTNU is normally awarded for 3-4 years with 0-25% of the time
spent on teaching and other academic work for the department. The objective of the
fellowship is to obtain a PhD degree, hence the successful applicant must be enrolled as a
PhD candidate at NTNU. See also information about PhD education at NTNU at
http://www.ime.ntnu.no/english/research/phd

The candidate will be associated with the Acoustics Group at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at NTNU and will work in a rich scientific environment through collaboration with other departments at the university as well as industrial companies. The candidate will benefit from a strong and multidisciplinary training.
Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Hefeng Dong by email:
dong@iet.ntnu.no or by telephone + 47 73 59 44 53 for further information.
Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for up to 4 years with 25% of the time spent on specified work. This work is primarily linked to teaching and is usually divided so that a relatively large part is done in the first half of the period of the appointment.

The appointment is at code 1017, salary level 43-58 in the national salary scheme, gross
NOK. 325.600 – 423.800 per annum (1 NOK ~ 0.125 EUR), and are normally remunerated at wage level 43 of which 2% is deducted for the State Pension scheme. The salary might be adjusted after negotiation with the employer to reflect the applicant’s experience.
The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics. Applicants must agree to participate in organised doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties for award holders.

The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest
possible extent. It is therefore a major political objective to achieve a balance of age and
gender and to recruit persons with an immigrant background. Immigrants are encouraged to apply for this post. NTNU wants to increase the proportion of women in its scientific posts. Women are encouraged to apply.

The application must contain information about education, examinations and previous
experience. Certified copies of certificates and documents must be attached.
Copies of publications and any other work which the applicant wishes to be taken into
account should also be enclosed. Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to specify the input of the applicant in a joint work, a short summary should be attached outlining the applicant’s input.

Applications are to be sent to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, NO-7491 Trondheim, Norway. Applications should be marked Jnr. IME-006-2008.
