Beasiswa S3 : PhD Scholarship in Genetic Programming for Data Mining Tasks
Label: Beasiswa S3, PhD Scholarship in Genetic Programming for Data Mining TasksPhD Scholarship in Genetic Programming for Data Mining Tasks
Closing date: 1 May 2009
Genetic Programming and Evolutionary Computing research group
Background
The Genetic Programming and Evolutionary Computing research group at
Victoria University of Wellington was recently awarded a large research
grant in Genetic Programming (GP) for data mining tasks by the Marsden
Fund of New Zealand (similar to the National Science Foundation in USA).
We are looking for a good PhD student in this field. The grant will
provide full funding for the student to cover the tuition fees, living
allowance, and travel cost.
The Project
Data mining tasks arise in a wide variety of practical situations,
ranging from classification to regression, clustering, and optimisation
tasks. Since the 1990s, genetic programming (GP) has become a promising
approach to building reliable data mining models quickly and
automatically. GP uses ideas analogous to biological evolution to search
the space of possible models to evolve a good solution for a particular
task. GP has been applied to many data mining tasks and achieved some
success. However, there are still limitations in program structures,
representations, genetic operators, search algorithms and theoretical
foundations in GP that restrict GP for difficult data mining tasks.
Applicants are invited from excellent and enthusiastic students wishing
to undertake a PhD in this area. The successful applicant will extend
the current research and address the methodological/theoretical issues
in GP and/or a real-world engineering applications in data mining using
GP and related evolutionary learning techniques.
The Student
Applications from both domestic and international students are invited.
A strong background in C/C++/Java programming and a basic background in
machine learning and pattern recognition are required. A good background
in genetic programming, evolutionary computing, neural networks,
statistics, or statistics/operations research is desired. Students
should have a first class Honour or a Masters degree in computer
science.

theoretical problems of wide perspective.
In particular, the study of models, algorithms and verification
methods of distributed systems with shared resources, with attention
to the problems of security, concurrency, real time, "open endness",
distributed decisions, etc. has fostered the development of the
informatics of the new wide area networks. Students acquire
extensive knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of
architectures and languages for global and grid computing, web
systems and services, in particular for business applications,
embedded systems, web data mining, wired and wireless networks, and

highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage
concrete interventions of political economy.
Theoretical methodologies and models are tested through the
methodical/systematic investigation of real world cases. At the end
of the program, students are able to identify commonalities as well
as distinctive characters of economies, markets, and industries.
Beasiswa Political Systems and Institutional Change
The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools
and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different
contemporary traditions in social sciences, thereby providing the
theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate
comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and
elaborate proposals for structural reforms. The courses will

1) PhD position in Creative Design - I (V51.063)
Project: Develop an interactive system to support communicating
implicit design representations.
Description: Creative thinking revolves around two complementary means
of communicating ideas, opinions and intentions: descriptions, that
can be spoken or written, and depictions, such as gestures, drawings
or pictures. Descriptions are especially useful for expressing the
explicit results of our internal reasoning. Descriptions are often
called extrinsic, because their meaning is determined by externally
defined rules of interpretation that we have acquired in the course of
our lives. In a creative process, where meaning is often not yet known
explicitly, some highly relevant aspects may be impossible to describe
adequately. Unlike descriptions, depictions, such as gestures, images
and sketches, are called intrinsic. Their meaning is not determined by
externally agreed interpretation rules, but instead extracted through
largely the same mechanisms of visual perception and cognitive
inspection that we rely on to function in the physical world.
Depictions tend to contain details that are not explicitly intended,
and that should hence be considered implicit.
This project aims to design and develop a mixed reality platform for
supporting industrial designers in recruiting, constructing and
manipulating depictions during creative design, avoiding premature
commitment to descriptions. Current research into design practice in
industry has proposed a number of concepts for interactive tools in
support of different aspects of design e.g., material collection,
browsing, organizing, creating and communicating designs. This project
will build on this research by developing these concepts into
applications and seeking to deploy them in actual design settings,
improving them iteratively based on feedback obtained from designers.
Outcomes: Working prototype of augmented reality environment to
support ideation by teams; experimental validation of the efficacy of
the tool to support creative design processes.
Requirements: The ideal candidate will have expertise in several of
the following areas: virtual or augmented reality software and
hardware, (industrial) design, (qualitative) research methods.
Important aspects to the work, next to idea generation and publishing,
is implementing ideas in software that involves, due to the nature of
the project, ample visuals (such as computer generated graphics,
images, etc.). Establishing the user experiences with developed
prototypes is another key aspect of the project (this aspect is
supported by much expertise in the team).
For more information on this project, candidates should contact
Jean-Bernard Martens: j.b.o.s.martens@ tue.nl.
You can apply for this job before 31-10-2008
2) PhD position in Creative Design - II(V51.064)
Project: Investigate creative problem solving process:
cross-disciplinary method diffusion.
Description: The proposed research will examine the diffusion of
methods for creative problem solving in multi-disciplinary fields,
such as interaction design. This subfield is the meeting point for
diverse fields of knowledge where engineering, scientific and design
approaches overlap, complement each other, cross-fertilize and
compete. While the transfer of techniques and methods between
disciplines can potentially increase creativity in support of
innovation is can also be fraught with challenges. Methods applied may
have diverse origins, may be shared between disciplines, or may be
applied differently by individuals subscribing to different
intellectual traditions. This whole phenomenon is described below as
method diffusion.
A systematic investigation of the diffusion of methods aiming to
support innovation can unravel how and why different methods are
applied successfully or misapplied, transformed or improved when they
are adopted by a different discipline and what push-back exists:
adoption from a different discipline can lead to revisiting original
ideas, improving them or rejecting them. Current practice regarding
method diffusion will be documented, flagging areas of opportunity and
pitfalls for practitioners. A (multiple) case study approach will
examine creative processes that were demonstrably successful
contrasting them to cases where a large degree of interdisciplinarity
and methodological innovation did not meet corresponding success.
Interventions to support specific design projects will be organised.
Through an action research approach, the effects of these
interventions will be evaluated.
Outcomes: An analysis of current design practices characterizing
pitfalls and best practice. A roadmap for method diffusion to support
creativity and innovation will be proposed, and experiences from its
application will be reported.
Requirements: Candidates should have an interest and background in the
areas of human computer interaction and interaction design. Special
interest and expertise in qualitative research methods,
ethnography/ anthropology are a bonus.

Beasiswa PhD Student in Logics for Multi-Agent Systems at Bergen University College
Label: Beasiswa PhD, beasiswa S3, info beasiswa 2008, info beasiswa Bergen UniversityBergen University College, Faculty of Engineering, has an open position for a PhD student in logics for multi-agent systems. The contract is for 4 years with 25% teaching duties. The PhD student will be attached to the Department of Computer Engineering, and the position is in the faculty`s prioritised area software development. The position forms a part of the faculty`s research programme in software development for distributed systems which is being developed to be one of the University College`s strategic research programmes. The programme currently involves 7 permanent professors and associate professors and several PhD and masters students. The Department is responsible for the bachelor programmes in computer engineering and information technology, as well as a masters programme in software development in collaboration with Department of Informatics, University of Bergen.
Multi-agent systems are software systems consisting of interacting autonomous components called agents. Autonomy entails that an agent`s behaviour is determined by its individual goals and beliefs about its environments, as opposed to central control. Agents need a way to represent their beliefs about the rest of the system, and a mechanism for reasoning about the system. When we design multi-agent systems we need a way to specify their properties and a method for verifying that a system has a given property. These are some of the reasons formal logic is considered to form one of the formal underpinnings of multi-agent systems. Logic is used for knowledge representation for agents, and is the foundation for tools which let us specify, verify and automatically synthesise multi-agent systems. Logics suitable for this purpose are logics for reasoning about various aspects of interaction. Such aspects include epistemic, intentional, strategic, normative, temporal, etc.
The successful applicant must have achieved a masters degree, or equivalent, in computer or information science, logic, or a similar field. Candidates who have submitted their master thesis for evaluation by the deadline of this call may apply if the degree is given within four weeks. No later than 6 months after the appointment is made the PhD student must be enrolled at a PhD study programme at the degree awarding institution (see below).
When evaluating the applicants weight will be put on competence in the research area as described above. The applicant should be competent in formal logic, preferably modal logic. Competence in related areas such as game theory or social choice theory will be an advantage. Existing research experience will count in the evaluation, as will a possible outline of a plan for the PhD research project.
The PhD student must enrol in an approved 4 years PhD programme. 25% of the time will be spent on duties such as teaching, development or administrative tasks. The employment period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a research fellow.
Bergen University College cannot award the PhD degree itself, but will together with a degree awarding institution develop a detailed plan for the PhD studies. The degree awarding institution will be chosen by Bergen University College, and has on previous similar occasions been the University of Bergen. The PhD student will be assigned an academic supervisor at Bergen University College, who will collaborate in applying for enrolment in a PhD programme depending on the candidate`s background. An application for enrolment should first be submitted after an appointment is made. If the evaluation committee finds that several applicants have approximately the same qualifications, the rules for allocation by sex quota in the personnel regulations will be used.
Applicants for the position will be evaluated by a committee consisting of three members. Copies of a written application, CV, diplomas, transcripts, publications and a publication list must be submitted in three complete sets within a week after the deadline. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the submitted sets are complete. The papers will be returned when the case is closed. Send all papers to: Høgskolen i Bergen, Seksjon for personal- og organisasjonsutvikling, PB 7030, 5020 Bergen.
Applicants may be called in for an interview.
Salery scale
PhD students follow code 1017, salary grade 45-50 of the Norwegian State Salary scale, gross NOK 353 200 to NOK 384 900 per year. PhD students are normally remunerated at salary level 45. There is a compulsory 2 % deduction to the pension fund.

Beasiswa The Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars Program 2008-2009
Label: Beasiswa 2008-2009, Beasiswa The Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars Program 2008-2009, Info Beasiswa S1 S2 S3 diploma scholarshipThe Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program provides expenses for a four-year course of study toward a bachelor’s degree for up to twenty-two exceptionally able Asian students annually from these countries and regions: the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
* Applications must be postmarked or submitted online by January 1, 2009.
* Students are advised to register now for SAT (or ACT) and TOEFL or IELTS.
* Notification by April 1, 2009.
* Japan notification by March 1, 2009.
Wesleyan is now accepting applications for participation in the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program. The chosen applicants will join 2,800 other Wesleyan undergraduates from throughout the United States and nearly 50 countries for study with an outstanding teaching and research faculty in the sciences and mathematics, the arts, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences.
This program is made possible by Wesleyan University and the Freeman Foundation, which aims to improve understanding and to strengthen ties between the United States and the countries and regions of the Pacific Rim.
Wesleyan University is located in Middletown, Connecticut, halfway between New York and Boston in the historic and colorful New England region of the northeastern United States. It is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts and sciences institution founded in 1831. A number of early Wesleyan graduates were influential educators and ministers in Asian countries, and the modern Wesleyan has formal ties to several prominent universities in Asia. The campus is home to a diverse population of 2,800 undergraduate students, equally divided between men and women, approximately 28 percent of whom are of African, Asian, or Hispanic descent, and nearly 190 students from foreign countries.
Approximately 200 graduate students, a number of whom are from Asian countries, are pursuing advanced degrees, principally in the sciences, mathematics, and music.
Wesleyan provides instruction in 46 major fields of study. Unlike some university systems abroad, in which students focus on one academic field, most American universities are based on a curricular tradition of liberal arts and sciences, in which breadth and depth of study are deemed equally important. At Wesleyan, the major programs of study involve one-third to one-half of a student’s course work, with the remaining time devoted to exploration of a variety of fields through which a student may broaden his or her background and understanding. More than 900 courses are offered, in which interdisciplinary pursuits are encouraged and an international perspective is fundamental.
Wesleyan graduates go on in high numbers to the best graduate and professional schools in the United States and to successful careers in engineering, business, law, medicine, education, politics, international relations, social service, and the arts. The primary purpose of study at Wesleyan, however, is not to provide vocational training in a specific area. The objectives of a Wesleyan education include the development of self-educating men and women who have mastered a major field, have learned to think critically, are cognizant of the variety of human experience, and have acquired the habits of imaginative and disciplined minds.
The liberal arts at Wesleyan are founded on an atmosphere of freedom, small college traditions, faculty resources, and student diversity. The University provides the facilities and opportunities of a research university while retaining the emphasis on teaching and the intimacy of a small college. The undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio is 9:1, enabling the faculty to provide direct and particular attention to undergraduate education. Beasiswa PhD to Study the Auckland Volcanic Field
Label: beasiswa 2008, Beasiswa PhD, Beasiswa PhD to Study the Auckland Volcanic FieldThe School of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, invites applications from outstanding students to fill three fully-funded 3-yr PhD positions to study the Auckland Volcanic Field, North Island, New Zealand. These PhD research projects form key components of a major, multi-year integrated research programme with the long-term aim of determining volcanic risk in Auckland.
The Auckland Volcanic Field is a small-scale monogenetic intra-plate basaltic system that has produced about 50 small centres in the form of tuff rings, maars, cinder cones and associated lava flows during its estimated 250 kyr lifetime. The most recent eruption was about 700 years ago, and the field is still considered potentially active.
PhD projects available:
1. Petrology of the Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF)
The volcanology, mineralogy and geochemistry of the AVF has been generally described and this project will focus on detailed studies (mineral chemistry, melt inclusions, isotopes, trace element modelling) which will lead to an understanding of how the mantle yields small scale melts and how these melts become modified during their rise to the surface. The successful applicant will have an interest in volcanic rocks, mineralogy and geochemistry; an ability to apply mathematical models will be an advantage. He or she will be expected to work closely with the PhD candidate working on the complementary project investigating physical controls of monogenetic volcanism.
Research team: Ian Smith (ie.smith@auckland.ac.nz), Colin Wilson, Steve Blake, Jan Lindsay
2. Physical controls on monogenetic basaltic volcanism
This project focuses on developing a quantitative understanding of the physical controls on monogenetic basaltic volcanism. The focus will be on the Auckland Volcanic Field, but suitable ancient analogues will also be targeted. The successful candidate will undertake field investigations to improve the current structural and tectonic model for the Auckland volcanic Field, and determine the relationship, if any, between tectonics and volcanism in this region. From a strong foundation in field observation, the candidate will formulate models for the transport of magma through the crust and test these using numerical simulations. This project provides an opportunity to produce innovative insights into how monogenetic volcanism evolves and varies in both time and space. Applicants for this PhD project should have a strong foundation in structural geology, tectonics and volcanology, and a high level of numeracy. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the PhD candidate working on the complementary project investigating the petrology of the Auckland Volcanic Field.
Research team: Julie Rowland (j.rowland@auckland.ac.nz), Colin Wilson, Steve Blake
3. Quaternary crypto-tephra study of sediments in Auckland maars
Auckland Volcanic Field maars contain excellent sequences of laminated lake sediments with numerous tephra layers from local and distant volcanoes, spanning the last 50,000 years. A candidate is needed to construct a tephrostratigraphic record of ash fall based on crypto-tephra (microscopic ash) layers. The purpose is to assess the past frequency and sources of ash fall in Auckland for hazard analysis. The project will involve the extraction and geochemical analysis of glass shards from sediment cores. A background in lake sediment cores; micro-geochemical analysis or tephra studies could be an advantage, but is not required.
Research Team: Phil Shane (pa.shane@auckland.ac.nz), Paul Augustinus, Graham Leonard, Jan Lindsay
Scholarship General information
Each PhD position includes a 3-year stipend of NZ $25,000 per annum (tax free), university fees and research costs (including field and analytical costs, and travel to national and international conferences). Applicants should provide a CV and include contact details of 2-3 referees and a short letter of motivation and research skills. Applications due by 30 September 2008 with an expected start date by December 08.
Applications should be emailed to Jan Lindsay: j.lindsay@auckland.ac.nz For specific information on each project contact the relevant team leader. For general information contact Jan Lindsay.
